The Hungarian Economy Should Stand on its Own Feet

19 February 2010

Politics and economy must join together and economic recovery should be based on Hungarian companies, said Viktor Orbán at the year-opening session of the Budapest Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The most important tasks of the next government will be to assess the actual situation of the economy, to simplify conditions for enterprises, to restore fiscal discipline, to restart the construction industry, to renew international economic relations and to defend the Hungarian economic resources such as land, water and Hungarian products. The Hungarian economy has significant reserves, such as the country’s location, quality soil, water resources, or even inventions.

If after the elections a non-coalition, single government can be formed for the first time in 20 years that could provide stability and restore trust with a firm and stable budget, then the economy could be given enormous opportunities. But it’s too early to speculate about a two-third majority, said the Fidesz chairman.

Political and economic speculation can only be sidelined if politicians and the business community join forces. Therefore Viktor Orbán proposed to sign an agreement between Fidesz and the Budapest Chamber of Commerce and Industry on drawing up together the economic policy chapter of the next government’s programme.
