Change Begins Today

Let us acknowledge the revolution that took place in the polling booths and take a pledge to build up a system of national cooperation, said Viktor Orbán at the inaugural session of the Parliament after President László Sólyom asked the leader of Fidesz to become the next prime minister of Hungary.

In his address to the new assembly, Viktor Orbán thanked the voters for standing by democracy despite their many disappointments and said he would complete his mission to execute "profound and far-reaching changes in Hungary". Orbán added that Hungarians had had enough of failures and expect the new government to defeat crime, unemployment, hopelessness and corruption.  At the general election people had voted for "a new system, one of national cooperation", said the prime minister-elect adding that this "historic act" should be recognised by Parliament through adopting a political statement which symbolizes national unity. The proposed document is to demonstrate that Hungary's future can be changed through national cooperation, that Hungary can be made strong and successful, Viktor Orbán said.
