1 October 2012

The Hungarian government seeks to open new crossing facilities on its border with Romania to promote smooth cooperation between economic regions on either side, the press chief of Prime Minister Viktor Orban told MTI in a statement on Monday.

Bertalan Havasi said that the issue had been raised at a meeting between the prime minister, Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi, and Titus Corlatean, his Romanian counterpart, in Budapest.

The talks were also attended by State Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office Peter Szijjarto, and the Romanian ambassador to Hungary.

Parties at the talks expressed their commitment to handle European issues such as the European Union's budget, cohesion funding or the common agricultural policy in close cooperation, the statement said.

Hungary and Romania share "an interest in fast progress" in a gas pipeline to be constructed by Azerbaijan, Georgia, Hungary, and Romania, as well as in the AGRI and Nabucco-West projects, Havasi said in the statement.
