Revolution in the Polling Booths

26 April 2010

Fidesz won a two-thirds majority in the second round of the Hungarian general election on Sunday. The Fidesz - Christian Democrats alliance has 263 seats in the 386-seat parliament, five more than the 258 seats needed for the supermajority.

"Today there was revolution in the polling booths," Fidesz chairman and prime minister candidate Viktor Orbán said to "Hungarians within and beyond the borders."

Orbán pointed out that his government was committed to democracy and to Europe. "Hungary has strengthened its commitment to democracy, its position in Europe and in the European Union," he said.

"Hungarians have overthrown the system and created a new one. The old system of leaders abusing their power and using it for personal gains has been replaced by one of national unity."

No party has ever won a two-thirds majority in Hungary since the first free elections in 1990.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso congratulated Viktor Orbán, saying his "clear election victory" was based on a pro-European programme and a strong commitment to European values.
